Internet Marketing

Internet marketing exists because the Internet is the brave new frontier in commerce, hence the phenomenon known as ecommerce. Many businesses are interested in doing their advertising and marketing in the worldwide web because of its ability to connect people, and that includes potential customers as well. On that note, here are the basic things you need to know when it comes to marketing through the Internet.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The main purpose of SEO is to increase traffic to a business’s website. The process of Search Engine Optimization is very technical in nature and involves improving both external and internal factors that influence the ranking of your website in search results.Internet Marketing Keywords

More specifically, SEO refers to the process of enhancing a website's visibility on search engines (and, consequently, the worldwide web) through "natural", "organic", or "algorithmic" search results. More often than not, the higher page ranking of a given website on the SERP (search engine results page), the likelier it is for the search engine's users to visit the website. While there is no secret formula that will magically lift your site to the top of every search engine, there are things that you can do to increase the chances that your site ends up in the top of the rankings.

For example, you can use keywords to your advantage (more on that later). You can also setup a blog and cover the latest trends related to your website in order to not only keep your visitors updated, but also gather users interested in knowing more about a certain topic, news item, and whatnot. Increasing the number of backlinks or inbound links via website promotion is also another viable SEO method.

Before You Start

Below are the very basics of what SEO is and how to implement strategies for your website. However, it is important to understand that getting to the top 10 rankings on all the major search engines is difficult to achieve, but not impossible. There are very few sites that reach this point and the effort to achieve this is typically beyond reason.

It is important to note as well that rankings change on a weekly basis because of the extreme amount of competition in the market. In order to maintain a high SEO ranking for your site you will need to monitor your keywords on a regular basis and rework information on your site to meet the expectations.

SEO strategy

When first starting out your website, you will need to come up with a plan to implement an SEO strategy. This can involve creating rich content for your site that is relevant to your products and services. You may choose to target specific types of searches, including video, local, image, or academic searches, depending on the type of site that you own. Advanced website optimization strategies may entail content and HTML code editing to both remove the potential barriers in indexing and increase their keyword relevance.

In regards to it being a viable Internet marketing strategy, it works because it takes into account how search engines work and take advantage of that knowledge to acquire higher page rankings and search engine visibility. SEO strategies involve editing your content and coding to increase the relevance of specific keywords and also to remove certain barriers to allow indexing through search engines.  This will allow the search engine “crawlers” to pick up on the content of your site faster and will help raise the rankings of your site. Ultimately SEO is a strong marketing strategy that will need to be implemented and watched in order to maintain your rankings.

Choosing Keywords

The first step in finding the right keywords to use for the content of your site is to do a bit of research on your competition. Start by searching your top list of keywords that are relevant to your site.  You can use the keyword tool through Google Adwords to determine some of the highest ranking phrases that are relevant to your product. There are several other software programs and websites available that can help you generate popular keywords for your subject.

Make sure to use the keywords exactly as they appear in order to increase the chances that your page will be picked up through the search engine. Besides knowing what to look for and learning how much a keyword costs, website owners should also learn how much traffic a keyword can rake in once you gain it. One effective rule of thumb to remember is that the less costly a keyword, the less likely people will be searching for it, so it will also produce less traffic.

Key Phrases versus Keywords

Key phrases are composed of keywords that have been formed together to make a phrase. This phrase is what search engine users typically type in order to find a site of interest. Every page on your website should be optimized for a single key phrase. For example, a page about keywords would be optimized to contain "choosing keywords" as its two-word search phrase.

Keep note that longer phrases are uncommonly used in searches, so a two-word key phrase is a good enough place to start. On the other hand, if you can write a solid page of material using a variety of keywords and key phrases, you should be able to gain high rankings in SERPs provided that you follow SEO fundamentals.

Social Media Optimization

Website owners don't only optimize your website for high page rankings in the most popular search engines out there; they should also cater to the most visited social media networks out there. A multitude of users spend a vast majority of their Internet surfing time browsing sites like Facebook, Twitter, and the like (in the past, MySpace reigned supreme, and at present, it looks like Google+ is next in line in the social media throne).

SMO or Social SEO is showing a lot of promise in becoming another channel for websites to gain a significant Internet presence. At any rate, there are two major categories of this field of website optimization:

  • Social Media Features: Adding social media features in your website is a viable method of SMO. This includes sharing buttons, user ratings, and polling tools. It also entails adding social news, RSS feeds, and third-party community functions like videos and images.
  • Social Media Promotional Activities: In turn, using a social media page to promote your website is also a must. Get a Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Plurk, and YouTube account for the sake of establishing your website's presence. This also includes posting status updates of social networking profiles, discussion group participation, commenting on blogs, and making your own blog.

The Pay Per Click Model

Pay per click, also known as PPC, cost per click, and CPC, is a kind of Internet marketing and SEO model that's employed to direct traffic to websites. More to the point, it's an advertising model that pays the website owner (or publisher) whenever an ad is clicked. In terms of search engines, advertisers instead bid on keywords or key phrases most relevant to their target audience or consumer base.

The payment rate of content sites are typically fixed price per click instead of using the bidding system. This is vastly different from traditional media's "pay per impression" methods, particularly newspaper and television advertising. To be more specific, it utilizes an affiliate model that offers buying opportunities wherever users are browsing and financial incentives (like part of the profits) to affiliated partner sites.

Increasing Back Links

Another important aspect of SEO is to increase the number of back links to your website. This can be done in a number of ways. Posting in forums is one way to create back links to your site. You may also comment on other individual's blogs with a back link to your site. It is important to make sure that all of your comments are relevant and useful to the topic at hand. With that said, here are the tips and tricks you need to keep in mind when increasing your website's number of back links:

  • Blog Commenting: To be more specific, you must comment in blogs in such a way that it doesn't appear like spam. Keep your comments relevant to the discussion (the more insightful it is, the better), be more discreet in where you place your web address, and never put your website's URL on the comment itself, because that will only cause it to be marked as spam anyway.
  • Directory Submission: There are a number of paid or free directories on the Internet. You can submit your website there in order to gain more visibility on the web at large because they too can serve as viable sources of back links.
  • Link Exchange: This is an alliance of websites reminiscent of the web rings of Web 1.0. A central organization handles these links, which are obtained by webmasters registering for a spot in their database. In return for registering, an HTML code that displays banner advertisements will be given to the registrants that they must include in their main page.
  • Forum Participation: In order for this to work, you must use a site link as anchor text for your account's signature. That way, every time you post in a forum, the link will appear. The more you participate in forum chat, the more back links you'll get. Remember not to spam your posts and observe proper netiquette when engaging in discussions.
